Advantage Group International is committed to supporting initiatives that help make meaningful progress toward gender equality in the workplace. As an organization that recognizes the value of doing more than just promoting inclusion, it was important for us to contribute to creating a sustainable resource for amplifying and bringing together women’s voices on several critical topics through Women In Conversation.
General Manager of MARS Southern Africa, Helen McDougall, Managing Director of Art of Talent, Jo Watt, and Customer Director of Advantage Group Africa, Lauren Filen, founded Women In Conversation. Women In Conversation aims to drive change and inspire women in the workplace through open conversations, sharing experiences, and finding actionable solutions.

Women In Conversation debuted at The Indaba Hotel on August 04, 2023, in Johannesburg, South Africa. Over 220 women from various organizations gathered for networking, empowerment, and transformation. Through the day’s agenda, which focused on three core topics, being political-savvy, toxic femininity and self-esteem, attendees could connect with a diverse community of like-minded individuals and expand their professional network while tackling issues often viewed as controversial.
To elevate the discussions and help attendees gain valuable insights and actionable strategies to navigate workplace challenges, speakers on each topic shared their valued perspectives on everyday struggles for women. The following speeches were made:
- Niven Postma – “Political Savvy – “If You Don’t Do Politics, Politics Will Do You”
- Njabulo Mashigo – “Toxic Femininity”
- Petra Laranjo – “Self-Esteem and How it Impacts: How You Show Up at the Workplace”
Panel and table discussions followed each speech, ensuring that all women in attendance contributed their views and voices to the topics. The aim was not only to listen, but also to converse about these meaningful issues.

“I just wanted to congratulate you all on a great event. You did something special that will impact many people’s lives and give them a different perspective and opportunity to succeed”
Joanne Gould, CEO of Smollan South Africa

As a key sponsor of Women In Conversation, Advantage Group engaged with numerous South African voices, including senior managers in the FMCG industry and the next generation of leaders, to discuss complex but important issues. Having this platform is an opportunity to share ideas and develop solutions to improve women’s power in the workplace. Together with Women In Conversation, we recognize the importance of ensuring that these conversations go beyond the event, and into the workspace — where they matter and will make an impact.
